A thick-stemmed evergreen shrub or small tree that reaches up to 10 m (33 ft). The fully grown fruit is between 6-15 cm in length and 3-8 cm in width, and its orange color is tinged with a little yellow; it is also characterized by the presence of five concave lobes longitudinally from head to base. The pulp of the fruit is edible, as is the papaya, and is usually cooked as a vegetable or eaten raw. It is available in the HEB chain stores in the United States of America, where it is preserved in a canned thick syrup or inside a jar. The pulp contains the enzyme papain, which helps in the process of digestion.
