Peppermint (mentha and piperita) is a perennial aromatic shrub, which belongs to the family Lamiaceae (the family of rosemary and lavender). It is a non-fruitful hybrid mint, a cross between watermint and spearmint. Thus, the plant cannot be grown from seeds, and can only be reproduced by vegetative growth (roots, plant parts, twigs). The plant grows during spring and summer and produces fragrant mint leaves rich in essential oil.
