Philodendron is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae, consisting of 90 species, according to TROPICOS, a service of the Missouri Botanical Garden. Other sources list different numbers of species; S.J. Mayo lists about 350–400 officially recognized species, while Croat lists about 700. Regardless of number of species, the genus is the second-largest member of the family Araceae. Taxonomically, the genus Philodendron is still poorly known, with many undescribed species. Many are grown as ornamental and indoor plants. The name derives from the Greek words philo "love, affection" and dendron "tree". These plants are usually known by their genus name "philodendron".
